General Information
What makes One Smart Cookie K9 Services different from other training options?
We go beyond manners and obedience training to focus on whole-dog wellness, integrating modern behavioral science, movement, and enrichment to create lasting behavior change. Our approach is rooted in neurobiology, emotional regulation, and canine fitness, ensuring training is not only effective but also engaging and fulfilling for both dogs and their humans.
We support both ends of the leash, helping pet parents build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their dog’s needs while also addressing their own mindset, stress, and movement. Whether working with high-energy dogs, seniors needing mobility support, puppies building strong foundations, or dogs experiencing fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS), we create customized training plans that support the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of both dog and human.
Our programs emphasize fun, trust, and teamwork, making learning a rewarding experience that strengthens the bond between dogs and their families while also helping pet parents feel empowered, capable, and supported.
What is your training philosophy?
We use a science-based, fear-free approach focused on neuroplasticity, positive reinforcement, and enrichment. Dog training should build confidence, engagement, and trust between dogs and their guardians.
Do you have any certifications or accreditations?
Yes. Our team holds multiple certifications in dog training, behavior, canine and human fitness, trick training, and animal acting, as well as specialized training in puppy development, therapy dog preparation, and service dog foundations. Two of our trainers are currently pursuing Service Dog certification. Our credentials also include Fear-Free, K9 Fit Club, and advanced behavior programs such as aggression and reactivity. We remain committed to ongoing education rooted in humane, modern training methods.
How long have you been working professionally in the industry?
Andrea Davis, the owner of One Smart Cookie K9 Services Inc., has nearly 25 years of professional experience in the human fitness, wellness, and coaching industry, with 13+ years also working professionally with animals.
Training and Specialties
Do you train dogs for protection or guard work?
No. We do not train dogs for protection or guard work. Our focus is on positive reinforcement-based learning, emotional well-being, and strengthening the human-canine bond.
Do you train therapy or service dogs?
We offer Therapy Dog Prep training for teams preparing for evaluation and certification. We also provide training for service dog foundations, focusing on skills such as confidence-building, engagement, and task training. While we do not certify service dogs, we support pet parents and handlers in building a strong foundation for future work.
What types of dogs do you specialize in?
We work with all breeds and ages. Many of our four-legged clients are high-energy, busy-brained dogs, seniors needing mobility support, and puppies building strong foundations, whether for family life or a future in dog sports. We also specialize in helping dogs experiencing fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) develop confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience.
What ages of dogs do you work with?
We work with dogs of all ages, from puppies just starting their training journey to adult and senior dogs needing enrichment, mobility support, or behavior modification. Each stage of life presents different training needs, and we tailor our approach accordingly.
Training Methods and Behavior Management
How do you handle behavioral issues such as aggression?
We assess the root cause and create a management and behavior modification plan. If a case requires additional expertise, we refer to a veterinary behaviorist.
What tools do you use for training?
We use a variety of reward-based training tools such as treats, toys, clickers, long lines, harnesses, training mats, scent work equipment, and balance tools for canine fitness. We do not use prong collars, choke chains, e-collars, or slip leads.
Do you use punishment, e-collars, or choke collars?
We use fear-free, evidence-based training that prioritizes trust, communication, and emotional well-being. Leading veterinary and animal behavior organizations, including the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), and the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB), strongly discourage the use of aversive methods such as e-collars, choke collars, and physical corrections.
Research shows that punishment-based techniques can increase fear, anxiety, and aggression, while reward-based training promotes confidence, learning, and a strong human-canine bond. Our approach focuses on positive reinforcement, structured movement, and enrichment to create lasting behavior change in a way that helps dogs feel safe, engaged, and understood.
What training methods do you use?
We use fear-free, positive reinforcement and training methods based on modern canine learning, neurobiology, and behavioral science to create lasting behavior change. Our approach focuses on how dogs learn, process information, and regulate emotions by integrating reward-based training, structured movement, and enrichment. We also recognize that training is not just about the dog. By supporting both ends of the leash, we help pet parents develop the skills, confidence, and understanding needed to build a strong, trusting partnership with their dog. This method supports mental flexibility, physical well-being, and emotional resilience, helping dogs and their humans thrive together.
Behavioral Concerns and Everyday Training
What is your opinion on crate training?
Crates can be a useful tool when introduced positively. They provide a safe, comfortable space and can assist with house training, decompression, and travel. If a crate is not the best option for a particular dog, we can suggest alternative management strategies to meet their needs.
How do you address separation anxiety?
Mild cases focus on independence training, desensitization, and confidence-building. Severe cases may require specialized support. We recommend Be Right Back by Julie Naismith as a starting resource.
What is your approach to house training?
House training requires consistency, supervision, and reinforcement. We create structured routines and provide management strategies to set dogs up for success.
What is your success rate with previous clients?
Success depends on pet parent commitment, consistency, and each dog's unique needs. Our testimonials reflect the positive impact our training has had on dogs and their families.
